Title of Document: PROBING ATMOSPHERIC AEROSOL AND GAS PROPERTIES WITH PHOTOACOUSTIC SPECTROSCOPY Pedro Antonio Bueno, Jr., Doctor of Philosophy, 2011 Directed By: Professor, Michael R. Zachariah, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Chemistry Professor, Russell R. Dickerson, Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science and Chemistry Absorption by atmospheric aerosols is the wild card for global climate change. Issues regarding atmospheric gases and aerosols have been at the forefront and the work presented within is directed at those issues. Specifically, work has been performed in order to help understand the issue of absorption in the atmosphere and whether this contributes towards positive forcing or warming of the atmosphere. In the process of conducting this research a custom, first-principles photoacoustic spectrometer was improved, calibrated and used extensively in order to obtain knowledge of the interaction of light with atmospherically relevant gases and make the first measurements of absorbing aerosols. The absorption cross-section of uncoated and coated soot was measured and quantified and found to be consistent with other work where amplifications on the order of nearly 100% were observed with uncertainty levels much lower than previously reported. Soot was also found to be optically thin where the total mass of the soot contributes to the absorption. Consequential to the soot work, the photoacoustic spectrometer developed to measure the absorption was utilized as a high precision greenhouse gas sensor. The photoacoustic spectrometer was found to produce results on the absorption of CO2 to within 3% of the theoretically predicted line profile Moreover, the photoacoustic spectrometer was used to determine measurable coating thicknesses of less than 10 nanometers on 100 nm soot particles. Photoacoustic and nephelometric spectroscopy of aerosol optical properties with a supercontinuum light source

A novel multi-wavelength photoacousticnephelometer spectrometer (SC-PNS) has been developed for the optical characterization of atmospheric aerosol particles. This instrument integrates a white light supercontinuum laser with photoacoustic and nephelometric spectroscopy to measure aerosol absorption and scattering coefficients at five wavelength bands (centered at 417, 475, 542, 607, and 675 nm...

Trace gas detection based on off-beam quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy: optimization and performance evaluation.

A gas sensor based on off-beam quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy was developed and optimized. Specifically, the length and diameter of the microresonator tube were optimized, and the outer tube shape is modified for enhancing the trace gas detection sensitivity. The impact of the distance between the quartz tuning fork and an acoustic microresonator on the sensor performance was experi...

QEPAS spectrophones: design, optimization, and performance

The impact of design parameters of a spectrophone for quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy on its performance was investigated. The microresonator of spectrophone is optimized based on an experimental study. The results show that a 4.4 mm-long tube with 0.6 mm inner diameter yields the highest signal-to-noise ratio, which is ∼30 times higher than that of a bare QTF at gas pressures betwee...

Interactive comment on “A Complete Parameterization of the Relative Humidity and Wavelength Dependence of the Refractive Index of Hygroscopic Inorganic Aerosol Particles” by Cotterell et al

Calculations of aerosol radiative forcing require knowledge of wavelength-dependent aerosol optical properties, 10 such as single scattering albedo. These aerosol optical properties can be calculated using Mie theory from knowledge of the key microphysical properties of particle size and refractive index, assuming that atmospheric particles are well-approximated to be spherical and homogeneous....

Standard photoacoustic spectrometer: model and validation using O2 A-band spectra.

We model and measure the absolute response of an intensity-modulated photoacoustic spectrometer comprising a 10 cm long resonator and having a Q-factor of approximately 30. We present a detailed theoretical analysis of the system and predict its response as a function of gas properties, resonance frequency, and sample energy transfer relaxation rates. We use a low-power continuous wave laser to...
